Nobody stays on Solen Reach. Three Charter-holders have signed the agreement, assessed the situation, and walked away. The math is bad. The island is not worth the Charter fee. Cael Marren has run the same numbers as everyone else. He has simply noticed that everyone else was wrong about what followed from them.

He arrives with a ledger and ninety-one days until the Charter factor's assessment. What the documents gave him is a portrait of a failing island. What the island gives him is something else: a harbor wall built on foundations that shouldn't exist, salt that preserves at twice the standard rate, an ore cliff that runs warm in its shadow, and a building on the ridge quietly drawing power for three generations — listed in the inventory as purpose unknown, value: zero.

Someone designed Solen Reach for a purpose that has been forgotten. The design is still here. So is whatever the Probability Guild has been suppressing for forty years. So is the Surveyor chart that arrived on a ship without explanation, pointing 340 miles northwest to something submerged and waiting.

Cael has ninety-one days to make the island viable. He has the rest of his life to understand what the island actually is.
